When you hear some strange noise in the attic, it can be a sign of a wildlife or rodent issue in your home. Like other locations in Florida, St. Augustine is home to several species of rats and other critters. Here are some of the pests you may encounter in your home:

• Wood Rats: These rodents are usually found in the northern parts of Florida, but they can also spread to other areas. They grow to about seven inches long and look similar to hamsters.
• Palm Rats: This rodent species is the most common one in many Florida cities. They have a darker coat with a lighter underbelly and can grow up to 14 inches long. The name comes from their ability to climb palm trees very well.
• Norway Rats: These rats tend to stay outside, but sometimes they can invade homes in St. Augustine. This rat species can transmit pathogens since they frequent sewers and other contaminated areas.
• Squirrels: Apart from rats, the city’s residents also report squirrels invading their homes. These little critters can cause a lot of damage, gnawing on electrical wiring, appliances, and furniture. Further, they can spread disease since they leave behind droppings and urine.
• Raccoons: These critters can destroy drywall, duct works, and electrical wirings. These creatures are smart enough to find their way into attics, sheds, and basements. They can rummage through garbage bins and damage garden crops in their search for food.
• Bats: A common sight in St. Augustine, bats can cause a number of problems when they take shelter in homes. They can often be found in wall voids, crawl spaces, and attics. They can leave behind guano, which can cause stains on surfaces and damage insulation, walls, and ceilings.
