Duval County Wildlife Activity by Season

Season Most Common Calls What's Happening
Winter (Dec to Feb)
Rats, mice, squirrels, raccoons, opossums
Cooler North Florida nights send rodents into warm soffits and attics in historic historic districts like Riverside, San Marco, and Springfield. By late January, raccoons and squirrels start scouting rooflines along the St. Johns River corridor ahead of spring nesting.
Spring (Mar to May)
Raccoon kits, squirrel litters, bats, armadillos, snakes
Mother raccoons and squirrels give birth in urban attics. Armadillos begin tearing up lawns across Mandarin and the Westside. Florida bat maternity season starts April 16, ending legal exclusion until mid-August.
Summer (Jun to Aug)
Snakes, armadillos, wasps/bees, bats, wild hogs
High heat and afternoon thunderheads drive venomous and non-venomous snakes into shaded garages and pool enclosures across the Beaches and Southside. Wild hogs root around wet soils near the Timucuan Preserve and rural Westside tracts.
Fall (Sep to Nov)
Bat exclusion, rodents, raccoons, coyotes
Bat exclusion resumes August 15 as maternity season closes. Tropical storms and autumn winds break oak branches over rooflines, opening fresh entry points for rodents and raccoons across older Duval neighborhoods.

What's Making That Noise in Your Duval County Home?

What You Hear When Likely Culprit
Fast scurrying or pitter-patter above ceilings
Early morning and late afternoon
Gray squirrels running through oak branches and entering roof vents
Light gnawing or rustling inside interior walls
Late night to pre-dawn
Roof rats or mice nesting in insulation
Heavy thumping, vocal growls, or loud dragging
Nighttime
Mother raccoons or opossums in attics or crawlspaces
Chirping, squeaking, or high-pitched fluttering near soffits
Dusk and Dawn
Evening bat colonies swarming out from tile roofs or gables

The time and type of sound usually point to the animal. If it is coming from the attic, don’t seal anything until we confirm what’s inside.

Trusted by Duval County Customers

Quick Catch holds a 4.8-star Google rating based on 1,082 reviews.

“Ryan and his team were excellent to work with! We were having an awful time with a large boar destroying our backyard and discovered Quick Catch through various reviews and a recent news telecast featuring their services. They made sure to come out the afternoon I had called them and began setting traps and cameras to monitor the situation. Due to the fact the hog terrorizing our yard was a larger, older animal they needed to adjust their approach to catching him a few times, but within two weeks the animal was trapped and removed (to our great relief!) Throughout the entire process Ryan was very helpful, quick to respond to any questions we had, and kept us informed of the situation at all times. It was a pleasure working with him and his team and I would highly recommend them to anyone having wildlife problems!”

Who Do You Call for an Animal Problem in Duval County?

Duval County animal control does not remove raccoons from attics. The Florida Department of Health in Duval County states plainly on its rabies page that Florida has no nuisance wildlife removal program. Numbers below were verified on official sites on October 5, 2026.

Florida Wildlife Laws Duval County Homeowners Should Know

  • Live-trapped nuisance wildlife can be released on the same contiguous property where it was caught. Off-site release is only legal for native species, on a site of at least 40 contiguous acres in the same county where the animal was captured, with written permission from that landowner (FWC, Rule 68A-9.010, F.A.C.). In short, a raccoon caught in Mandarin can’t be dropped off in a Baker County forest.

  • Transporting trapped wildlife cannot override a rabies alert or quarantine issued by the County Health Department or County Animal Services. Check DOH-Duval for any active alert; Duval has had several in recent years, including the November 2025 raccoon advisory.

  • Bats cannot be excluded during maternity season, April 16 to August 14. Exclusion devices are only legal from August 15 to April 15, and killing or harming bats is illegal (FWC, Bats in Buildings).

  • FWC does not license nuisance wildlife trappers, and property owners generally do not need FWC authorization to remove most nuisance wildlife from private property. That is exactly why choosing a licensed, insured company matters. Quick Catch Pest Control License #: JB329824.
